In this blog, we wanted to address a frequent question we have been receiving recently: Is your ZOI high-polyphenol extra virgin olive oil (HP-EVOO) generally safe to consume while taking a GLP-1 receptor agonist (such as Ozempic, Wegovy, Mounjaro, or Zepbound)?

The short answer is Yes.

However, because GLP-1 medications significantly slow gastric emptying, incorporating healthy dietary fats requires a thoughtful approach to minimize potential digestive side effects.

Below is a breakdown of the metabolic benefits, safety considerations, expert insights, and practical ways to combine HP-EVOO with your medication routine.

Metabolic Benefits: A Synergistic Approach

Polyphenols found in our olive oil and in all HP-EVOO, include compounds like oleuropein, elenolic acid, and oleocanthal. These antioxidant compounds are responsible for the distinct peppery throat sting of high-quality extra virgin olive oil. When combined with GLP-1 therapy, HP-EVOO offers several key advantages:

  • Combats Constipation & Supports Gut Health: Constipation is a common side effect of GLP-1 medications. HP-EVOO helps lubricate the digestive tract. Furthermore, its polyphenols act as prebiotics that feed beneficial gut bacteria and help maintain intestinal barrier integrity to reduce systemic inflammation.
  • Naturally Amplifies Satiety Hormones: Emerging research demonstrates that specific olive compounds, notably elenolic acid, stimulate enteroendocrine L-cells in the intestine to secrete endogenous GLP-1 and Peptide YY (PYY). While dietary oil does not replace a pharmacological prescription, it works synergistically with natural digestive signaling.

Recent preclinical findings on elenolic acid (a bioactive compound derived from olive breakdown) demonstrate significant metabolic effects:

  3. Check Labels for Phenolic Content: Standard supermarket olive oils often contain low polyphenol levels (50–100 mg/kg). Look for certified EVOO explicitly labeled with high phenolic content (ideally 250 mg/kg or higher).

GLP-1-Friendly Meal Ideas

These simple, high-protein meal ideas use raw HP-EVOO as a finishing touch to optimize nutrition without triggering nausea:

1. The "Digestive Ease" Power Bowl

  • Base: A small serving of warm quinoa or wild rice (well-cooked grains are gentle on a slowed digestive tract).
